KNEE REPLACEMENT

Knee replacement is now the most common joint replacement in Australia, with approximately 68400 surgeries performed in 2022. The worn or damaged knee is replaced with an artificial joint which usually improves pain and function and will normally last a lifetime. Knee replacements can wear out and become loose with time, particularly when performed for young patients. This may cause problems such as pain or fracture (bone breakage). Revision surgery may then be required to replace the worn implant. Revision surgery may be considerably more complicated than primary surgery so the decision to have a knee replacement needs to be carefully considered. In addition to having extensive experience in total and revision knee replacement, Dr da Assunção has a special interest in joint preserving surgery of the knee, to try and avoid early total knee replacement, particularly in young or very active patients. Dr da Assunção will discuss the risks and benefits of surgery with every patient and provide a tailored solution for each individual that meets their particular needs and expectations. Detailed information about knee replacement can be found in the Resources section and information about knee preserving surgery can be found in Partial Knee Replacement and Knee Osteotomy.
